Lancaster 2 – 0 York
Lancaster men’s 2nd team produced a fine performance to secure a comfortable 2-0 victory over York, kicking off what was to be a phenomenal weekend for men’s football at Lancaster.
The opening ten minutes was a predictably cagey affair but Lancaster soon rose to the occasion, Euan Condron forcing the first save of the match from the York keeper with a powerful header from a corner.
York’s keeper was on hand once again to keep Lancaster at bay, making a smart save to deny Tena, but Lancaster’s no. 8 would not be denied a second time moments later. Good work from Ryan Thomas set up the goal, the striker leaving York defenders trailing in his wake as he drove down the right, staying on his feet when he might have won a free-kick to cut the ball back for Tena to smash home from inside the area.
Lancaster continued to push on following the goal and were inches away from a sensational second when Badmus cut in from the left, curling a spectacular thirty yard effort against the top of the post. It took York until the stroke of half-time to register their first shot on target, goalkeeper Ben Tonge making a smart save from a drilled free-kick on the edge of the area to keep Lancaster deservedly in front at the break.
Lancaster continued to edge closer to a second after the break, mounting increasing pressure on York’s goal but were consistently thwarted by a goalkeeper in top form who made a series of fine saves to keep his side in it. The match was ultimately settled with ten minutes remaining when Jack Pitchers produced his best Juninho impression, hammering home a sensational free-kick off the underside of the bar from long range to finally give Lancaster a two goal cushion that allowed them to see the game out in some comfort.
